I didn’t know about Bite Beauty Lip Lab until I walked past it on the way back to the apartment we rented for the week in SoHo. When I glanced into the brightly lit store two girls were sitting on clear stools, watching as their lipstick shades were being mixed. There were a few more girls waiting inside, so I decided to walk over the following day as soon as they opened.

When I walked in I was greeted by Sophie, a delightful makeup artist for Bite. She smiled and asked me what I was looking for, and so I told her I was interested in a great everyday color, a nude-pink. Sophie then placed a clear sheet on the white counter which she used to write down the color combinations and mix shades on. Before selecting shades she had me choose my lipstick finish; I decided on creme deluxe, a creamy, long-lasting formula. From the array of lip paint pots that are set up at the “play stations” she selected three nude shades and three pinks. She then picked up a thin, spatula looking tool to scoop the color from the pots, and began mixing.

The first shade she had me try on was a combination of pinks, nudes and browns, which yielded a gorgeous deep pink. She handed me a lip brush and after I applied the color, she asked me if I liked it, and if I wanted to change anything about it. Although I loved this first mixture, I asked if she could make it just a bit lighter, to which she replied “no problem, let’s do that!” The result? The nude-pink of my dreams. “Is this ‘the one?'” Sophie asked. To which I said yes, this is it! I then was able to customize my lipstick scent and I chose a mixture of cherry and vanilla – sweet but not overpoweringly so. I then watched as Sophie mixed the shades to make my lipstick – first she had to melt them together and then pour the mixture into a mold before allowing it to harden. The lipstick was then pulled through the tube, placed in a box, and voila! A fully customized lipstick in 20 minutes flat!

If you haven’t heard of or been to Bite Beauty Lip Lab I highly recommend you check it out if you are in or plan to travel to New York City. I had a wonderful experience and can’t wait to create a custom red or berry lipstick the next time I am in town!

Hey are you planning to go again? I really want to make one or two lipsticks but I live in BC (Canada), and I really do not think I will be going to New York anytime soon. I was wondering if you are going you could make one for me? I can send you a picture of me and maybe of a couple colors I would like? I could buy your lipstick for you!
