Let’s Discuss: Buying Products Because of Celebrities

Happy Saturday! I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend thus far. For today’s post I wanted to discuss something I have done for a while – looking up what beauty products my favorite celebrities are using, and then running to the store to purchase.

The first time I did this was after I got into the show Gossip Girl when I was in college [yes – I was obsessed. mainly because I had read all of the books in high school]. I desperately wanted to achieve Serena’s [played by Blake Lively] golden eye look and peachy pink lips, and so I began researching what the show’s makeup artist used on her. I had read that Blake often wore the Chanel Glossimer in Glow on the show, and of course the brand has since discontinued the shade. What did I do once I discovered this tragedy? I tried to find other lip glosses out there that looked similar; Revlon’s Nude Lustre was an almost exact dupe, but now that shade is no longer made, either! Le sigh.

In addition to Blake Lively, my beauty icons include Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lily Aldridge, Miranda Kerr, Kate Beckinsale and Kate Middleton. They always look glowingly beautiful in photos and never seem to over do it in the makeup department. From my recent research I have discovered that Lily Aldridge is a fan of Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray; Kate Beckinsale can be found wearing Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer [and wore Nyx Glam Lip Gloss in 07 to the Total Recall premiere]; Miranda Kerr hearts rms beauty’s Lip Shine and “Un” Cover-Up; Rosie Huntington Whiteley wears Burberry Beauty’s Lip Glow in Nutmeg; and the Duchess enjoy’s Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick.

So now I ask you: do you buy products because your beauty icons wear them? If so, who are your beauty icons and what products have you purchased?

I am totally guilty of buying products because my celebrity icons wear them. I guess I undergo a disillusioned way of thinking that when I purchase such a product, I could possibly be as glamorous or as elegant as them. My beauty icons include Olivia Wilde, Audrey Hepburn, Rachel McAdams, Kate Beckinsale, Marion Cotillard, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, and Lauren Conrad. Phew! Didn’t realize how many I had!

Not at all! Most of the celebrities I admire don’t share the same skin tone that I do, nor do we have the same eye shape. I do admire their makeup and may try to adjust looks to suit me.

The only item inspired by celebrities that I have been searching for is a peachy lipstick like the one worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But alas, it seems I can’t pull off that shade with my skin tone, either!

I guess I am guilty of doing this but with different types of celebrities. I tend to follow what “celebrities” on YouTube wear rather what TV/film celebrities wear because for some reason I feel like they are more relatable and have similar skin concerns as me.

I can relate to this too! I don’t think I’ve ever searched for the specific product I’ve seen a celebrity wearing but if I see a make up look I like, eg, a certain lip colour, I will list after it and go out looking for something similar. I follow many celebs and their mua/style teams on Instagram which is the main place I see these looks in the first place. Most recently it’s been the posts by Khloe Kardashian and her team that have inspired me as she always has such a natural glow too. Her looks are simple enough for us mere mortals to emulate also!
    Lovely blog post (:

I honestly never bought a product because of celebrities, but I have bought most products because they are being used by my favorite makeup gurus! However, if they use high end brands, I tried to look for the dupes in drugstore brands. Probably not the best thing to do (because you get what you paid for) but I can save a lot 😀 I am currently looking for the perfect shade of everyday lipstick (yes, I haven’t found it yet) and I got my eyes in corals!
