I hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas – I am still full from eating a crazy amount of snacks and cookies! Now that Christmas is over, I’m thinking about the next big event before going back to reality in DC – New Year’s Eve. I still have some work to do in the way of an outfit, but I know that my makeup will be true to me – my favorite look, a smokey eye and natural lip.
If you’re like me and love to play up your eyes, here is a makeup idea using only wallet-friendly, drugstore products!
The Maybelline The Nudes palette has some really gorgeous, pigmented shades, so I thought it would be great for creating a night-out look. First, take the shade on the bottom left and sweep it all over lids with a fluffy brush – this will act as a base for other shades [oh – and don’t forget to prime your eyes first if you have oily lids!]. Next, take the shade that is four in from the left, on the bottom row, and apply this to the crease using windscreen-wiper motions, and blend well with a fluffy brush so that there are no harsh lines. Take the bronze shade, four in from the left on the top row, and apply this to the upper and lower lash lines [winging out a bit at the top], as well as to the outer-v of the eye. Again, blend very well with a fluffy brush [like a Mac 217]. For added drama, take the black shade with a thin liner brush, and apply this to the upper lash line, winging the line up and out at the ends, and then blend this with a smudge brush for a more smokey effect. To open up the eye area, take the gold shade, three in from the left on the bottom row, and apply this to the inner corners with either a small brush or your ring finger. Lastly, finish the eye look with a black liquid liner and mascara. L’Oreal’s Super Slim is the best [in my opinion] at the drugstore – apply this on the upper lash line, winging out at the ends; follow up with several coats of black waterproof mascara – my choice is Maybelline Full ‘N Soft.
For pretty, glowing cheeks, I love this blush and bronzer/highlighter combination – Covergirl Blush in True Plum, and e.l.f. Golden Bronzer. Take a thin brush [Real Technique’s Contour Brush is my fave], swirl it in the two darkest shades of the e.l.f. palette, and apply this to the hollows of the cheeks, as well as onto the temples. For an all over bronze effect, swirl a brush through all four shades, tap the brush to remove excess product, and brush onto the cheeks using big sweeping strokes. Next, apply True Plum blush to the apples of the cheeks, blending upwards. Lastly [I know – lots of steps, but it looks great!] take the lightest highlight shade, and pat onto the tops of cheekbones, and onto the cupids bow.
Finally, for a beautiful pinky-peachy-nude lip, take L’Oreal Nude Privee Lipstick in Julianne, and apply to lips directly from the bullet, and then blend out with a finger. In addition to being one of the prettiest natural shades at the drugstore, this lipstick’s formula is really smooth and hydrating – perfect for a long evening out!
